Some thirteen feet down you find a completely flattened, nigh near unidentifiable, broken corpse. It rests facing forward, splayed out and with the shattered skull hanging to the left. The blackened tongue reaches even further out in an unfinished gasp. Near where the hands would be? The reddish clay subsoil is darker and smells of burnt ozone. This extends roughly six and a half feet from each hand and crosses over the skull in a crude "X". A broken agafari wood stick with one end holding a small jawless skull sits at his belt. His black robes are torn, ripped and burnt near the sleeves.
The flies soon start to crowd. Effing bloodflies.

Detect Magic.
(Kleys will take the staff and robes and anything else that is magical.)
(Then he'll carefully search the body for marks, scars, hidden items, secret spellbook stuff, etc.)
"Is his body too ruined for Speak with Dead?"

While the others mess with the dead, HurK uses life drain on two of the burrowing animals to restore his lost hit points.
(Life drain 18, rolled 10)

Nothing is showing as magical currently. (Gamespeak: Nothing made saves vs crushing blow.) There may be shreds of magical residue - located within the robe, the broken skull wand and the two areas outstretched from his hands.
A very well made bronze dagger is found intact - but does not register as magical.
We'll say that 8 feral aprig were summoned to help dig. Draining life from such a pack would certainly cause the death of one or more of them.

(Kleys takes that stuff anyway. And the Dagger if no one wants it more.)

- I would not mind the dagger as it's metal, and then check its built to try to replicate it in the future, even if it's with bone or any other materials - Kem says only if the style of it is different to any other that can be commonly found in Athas

Mak dismisses the feral Aprig then turns his attention to the looted corpse. He chants over the dead body for ten minutes, then squats infront of the face of the corpse and begins to ask questions.
"Explain the function of the orrery and how rods may be removed without damage to the orrery or our persons.
Where are your caches of magic items and equipment?
What was the function of the items that were on your person when you died?
Describe for me the external appearance and location of your spellbooks."
((Speak with Dead, Lv.3, 4 questions. Save v Spell to resist.))

Hurk's life drain kills four aprig, renders 3 unconscious while the last one loudly squeals in agony. He regains 22 total HP.
Questions are asked:
"Explain the function of the orrery and how rods may be removed without damage to the orrery or our persons.
"The orrery was Rajaat's repository of magical knowledge... the only one I'm certain existed. There may also have been other similar structures or repositories of knowledge. It (the arcane engine) may have been powering protections or a ward of sorts. The number of rods removed? I was warned to not pull too many circles of power too quickly. Densis and I used what we could to revive the weakened Champions. We were shocked as we removed them and had to do it in stages." Where are your caches of magic items and equipment?
"I have caches in Tyr and a hidden wagon nearby the ridge of this chasm."
What was the function of the items that were on your person when you died?
"The rods I carried were offensive in nature, spells of woe & invocation. The wand was made of a Gulg shaman's skull who crossed me in my youth. When it was whole I used it to animate the dead for Kalak's ziggurat. My templar's cassock once protected me from some physical harm."
Describe for me the external appearance and location of your spellbooks."
"My tomes are bound by dwarven slave's hand, the covers of leathers bought from halfling cannibals and of the finest paper from the traders in Altaruk. They should still be under my bedding within my wagon... up the ridge and hidden from prying eyes. I could not let the newly awakened horror steal my magics - they would have betrayed me were they close by."

Kleys turns to the group: "Securing that wagon's contents just became my priority #1."

darksunsouthtablelands.obsidianportal.com/items/dote-mal-s-bronze-daggerPlans for rest? Watches? We'll say it's midday at the point. Also, if anyone is switchin PCs soon, gimme a head's up. Things on the docket that you may or may not be considering: - an apprentice was promised to the Spirit of the Land here - Kalak's body still needs to be taken care of, Hurk's secondary tree PC promised it to some odd wizards - hidden wagon/spellbooks - the elves and their return to Nibenay - still being hunted by unnamed assassins, one of their employers is dead? Another still lives? - dream spider webbing/Shardivan - the ship, Abez and possible flint trade - possible further explorations of any of the following locales: Buried City, Bodach or even here in the Troll Grave Chasm - also remember if Mak leaves for any extended period of time that rations and water will need to be accounted for - psurlon still lurk in the unseen areas beyond
