I never read this series.
Just started Just Plain Pavek's story today. While there's slight inconsistencies from canon?
I'm enjoying it so far.

It's pretty good. The introduction of laq gives a little color to the whole "drug underworld" side of Athas.

So far my beef is with the child having been a preserver (never really clear that was what he was) and then being turned to a defiler after one spell is cast.
The book references the Prism Pentad and Sadira literally defiles on and off without completely having this issue. Also the proximity of the Smoking Crown and salt flats that don't seem to exist in the area about Urik.
The templar detail is a great addition.
There's a lot of gold running about.
