"You speak of Defilers...I believe this is what the Warbringer taught us. It was the key power that led to our victory. The Warbringer and his spellcasters were far more powerful than anything our opposition could hope to bring to bear against us, and so we destroyed them wholesale. Certainly, there was much destruction of Athas at our hands--forests crumbled to ash, meadows sank into fetid swamps, and mountains degenerated into lifeless, crumbling heaps of rock--but the Warbringer promised that once the vile races of the Rebirth were annihilated to the last, all would be undone by the mighty spell he would weave to restore the whole world."

- "So, you can see the answer to that though..." - answering Irikos without looking at him, still looking at Rimir

"The destruction you describe would lead a verdant world to look exactly like this wasteland, no? Who was to populate this reborn world of your Warbringer?"

"The humans, of course, as the primary race. There would also be the Halflings and the Thri-Kreen, for the Thri-Kreen were witnesses of the birth of the world and stand apart from the fouler Rebirth races. Something must have happened. Something must have stopped the Warbringer from casting his spell and restoring the world. Perhaps Gallard knows--I must speak with him at once!"
Irikos runs out of the city at full pelt--or, at least, he tries to. He barely gets ten paces before he's stopped short, as if by a heavy slaver's chain around his neck. His legs keep going for a moment, pulling them from under him, and he lands in a great crash of metal in the sand.

"Perhaps we finish the plan first? Free you and retrieve the undead army for Gallard, per his request? "

- Hwasa's mood changes to that of a slight smirk, for a split of a second, and looks towards the direction that Irikos took

Coughing and hacking hoarsely, Irikos picks himself up, shaking himself like a dog to get the sand out of his armor. "Very well, then. Gallard is a fellow crusader for the restoration of the world--at least, he was. If Gallard has sent out a call for swords, my cause is his own."

"Wait, you said 'endless blue oceans and islands covered in vibrant jungles, like the Halflings of old lived in.' and 'for the Thri-Kreen were witnesses of the birth of the world and stand apart from the fouler Rebirth races.'"
"What are the Rebirth Races and why do you not speak of the humans in this ancient time?"

Irikos coughs into his plated fist and wheezes quietly for a moment. "Well, you see, at the dawn of Athas, the only races that existed were Halflings and Thri-Kreen. The Halflings were by far the most dominant, with Thri-Kreen being confined to nothing but base savages little better than animals.
"The foolish Halflings destroyed their own paradise and caused much of the ocean to evaporate. The Warbringer promised to rebuild their paradise as it was then, but promised that humans, instead of just Halflings, could live there. The Rebirth races are those that were not present at the dawn of the world--Dwarves, Orcs, Elves, Half-Elves, Giants, Lizard Men, Trolls, Tari, Aarakocra, Pterrans, Kobolds, Goblins, Ogres, Gnomes, Pixies, and Wemics....as well as Humans.
"We were charged with destroying them all--killing each and every one of those races. Man, woman, and child were not to be spared. The entire race was to be wiped out wholesale, never again to walk Athas. This the Warbringer taught me."

"Oh, huh. What made the humans, a Rebirth Race, so special to thr Warbringer?"

"I...do not know. I believe he simply believed that the loyalty of the Human race was required, because they were the majority of the population and would thus form the backbone of his armies. I know that all of my soldiers were human, with the occasional Halfling or exceedingly rare Thri-Kreen among them."

"Hmmm. And why did the Rebirth Races need to be wiped out?"

"The Warbringer declared that so long as they existed, their essences would anchor the world to its present state. I do not pretend to know the vagaries of magic as he does. The Warbringer created magic--if he says something about it, it is simply true."

(Rimir's face screws up into a look)
"Umm, would not the essences of humans - as a Rebirth Race - not also cause issues? Especially since there were so many humans.
Clearly something prevented this spell from happening."

"Well, if that was the case, the Warbringer would've..."
He trails off.
"...said...something..."
