Based on the route we’ve walked from the starting point where would I guess the left and right exits go?

For me (as player so also as character) it’s looking like the left exit from this room would go to this oculus front room (the nose of the Messenger), and the right one would eventually curve back to the back of the Messenger where Erfurth said the other room was, the Conduit.

So you would then have a circle going round, as the hall we found him and the Strange in is most likely leading to this Conduit room too.

This is correct. Right from this room to the Oculus and right to the Conduit. At least according to your new friend.
