Rounds and turns are units of time that are often used in the AD&D game, particularly for spells and combat. A round is approximately equal to a minute (it is not exactly one minute, so as to grant the DM some flexibility during combat). A turn is equal to 10 minutes of game time. Turns are normally used to measure specific tasks (such as searching) and certain spells. Thus, a spell that lasts 10 turns is equal to 100 minutes or one and two-thirds hours.
Combat rounds are much the same. While you often think of it like swinging a blade and either hitting or missing, it's assumed that many other feints, swings, dodges, taps, etc... are going on during that minute/round that amount in the damage done.
But this is purposely not exact. To get that exact would defeat the simplicity of combat. In more complex non D&D games, single rounds of combat can get even more drawn out trying to reconcile. The beauty of AD&D is that is passes quick enough for us all not to die of boredom (usually).
